Five Great Things To Do Once You Get Your Business Degree

SHARE

So you’ve graduated with your business degree. Now what? The world is your oyster! What steps should you take to get a job? Should you take a little time to add to your life experiences now?

Trust me, there is no stranger feeling than the first few months after graduating with your degree. Your whole life people told you what the next step would be and what it would be like. Now you’re suddenly standing on the edge of a mountain, absolutely clueless about what comes next or what you should be doing. Schoolsprepare you for all the background knowledge you’ll need to function and play with the big dogs, but they can’t literally hand you a career. There is much work to be done, but you are probably also thinking, “I have the rest of my life to work… I need to take a breather and have a little fun!” So what’s a college grad to do? Here are 10 suggestions:

1. Treat yourself to a vacation. Go somewhere remote, exotic, and exciting. Backpack across Europe. Take an affordable cruise. Drive across America, stopping at every national park. Hit a city you’ve always wanted to see – whether it’s Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, or Miami. This will clear your head immensely! If you’re low on cash and into the more “authentic” experience, check out www.couchsurfing.com or www.homeforswap.com.

2. Join the Peace Corps. This is a great option if you want to make a difference and satiate your wanderlust without making it look like you’re just “screwing around.” The Peace Corps always looks good on a resume. You will need to commit for at least two years, but you’ll enjoy reduced tuition for grad school if need be, receive a financial stipend, and gather valuable work experience. You will find many shorter term opportunities with volunteer organizations too if you wish.

3. Link up with an employment agency. If you put off the internship experience, you may be disappointed to learn that most – if not all -- internships require you to be enrolled in school (and pay squat). However, most workers get their career start working as “an agency temp.” If you prove to be a good protégé, you can expect to be hired on, usually within the year. It’s best to research which local agencies work with companies you’d like to work for, and sign up to more than one to increase your odds of success.

4. Be smart with your money. Start a retirement fund. It’s never too early to start slinging money away and building a nest egg. Keep living cheaply. If need be, move in with your parents until you pay off your debts. At the very least, you should be living with a few other people and subsidizing your cost of living. What you do with your money now will set a precedent on whether you succeed or fail miserably in the near future. If you want a house, a nice car, a wedding, and all the great things that come with wealth and success, then you must manage your finances wisely now. Pay down your debts first, save up an emergency fund second, and begin saving toward a big purchase goal like a home third. You will thank yourself later.

Work on a cruise ship. Surf www.cruiselinesjobs.com to find a job on the high seas that provides adventure, fun, and competitive pay. You can travel to interesting places, while working as a casino dealer, chef, entertainer, server, or retail manager. While the ship’s in port, you can hit the docks and see the world. What could be better?
